One of the most magical experiences I have as part of the SeaLounge Catamaran team is sailing through the Caribbean waters and encountering the incredible marine life that inhabits these seas. Each outing is unique, but there’s one thing that never changes: the thrill of seeing a dolphin jump near the catamaran or spotting a whale in the distance.
I want to share with you some of the most common species we see during our tours, and the best times of the year to find them. If you’re a nature lover like me, get ready to fall in love with the ocean.
🐬 Dolphins: The Acrobats of the Ocean
Seeing dolphins in the wild is simply spectacular. They often swim near the catamaran, play in the waves we create, and seem to enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs.
In this region of the Caribbean, it’s common to see bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), known for their curious and sociable nature.
📅 Best time to see them: Although they can be seen year-round, sightings are more frequent from March to September, when the sea is calmer and warmer.
🐋 Whales: Majestic Giants
Few things leave me speechless like seeing a whale surface. Along our routes, the most common species is the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), which migrates from the cold waters of the North Atlantic to the Caribbean to breed and give birth.
These giants travel thousands of kilometers every year, and if you’re lucky, you might see them breach—or even hear their songs if you’re snorkeling nearby.
📅 Whale watching season: From January to March, especially near deeper and quieter coastal areas.
🐢 Sea Turtles: Rare and Precious Visitors
Although they’re less common, whenever I see a sea turtle during our trips, I feel like the ocean is giving us a gift. The most frequent ones in this area are the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), both of which are endangered species.
They’re usually spotted near reefs or in shallow waters, where they feed on sponges, algae, or seagrass.
📅 Key months: Turtles are more visible between May and October, which coincides with their nesting and feeding season.
Every time I head out on the catamaran, I feel like I’m entering another world—one where respect for nature and curiosity go hand in hand. My goal isn’t just to show you these amazing animals, but also to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans.
